Wellness Centre Mental Health Resources – Winter 2018

The SU Wellness Centre is offering a multitude of mental health resources and programs this semester, including:

General Wellness Programming

1. Wellness In Residence: Social programming currently offered to students in residence twice a month on Monday evenings. This is a great resource for supporting general self-care and enhancing social connection. (see attached schedule)

2. Thursday Hang @ the Hub: Every Thursday, the Campus Community Hub Peer Support Team hosts Thursday Hang @ the Hub events. These events are drop-in and are open to all UCalgary students. They provide students with the opportunity to take part in activities to de-stress, and meet new other students to help reduce loneliness and build connection. (see the attached schedule). Students can access information about upcoming events on the Hub website: http://www.ucalgary.ca/wellnesscentre/hub

3. Procrasti-Nation: a study group for students that require accountability and provides a motivating environment for students so they can get work done. This is a study group environment where the focus is on individualize work. Each study session is an hour long, 45 minutes of studying and a 15 minute break. Before the start of the session Peer Supporters will lead the group making individual SMART goals (Strategic, measureable, achievable, realistic, and timely). Students are to leave the room for their break, however breaks are not mandatory. Groups run weekly Tuesday, from 4:00pm-7:00pm and start on the hour.

4. Laid Back Lunch: Every Wednesday students are invited to bring their Lunch to the Campus Community Hub and engage in self-care activities such as colouring, board-games, slime and stress ball making. Each week we will have a different Featured colouring activity ranging from Superheroes, Disney Characters to Memes. Our space has a microwave, sink, and kettle for students to use. We will also have coffee, tea, hot chocolate and light snacks such a granola bars and popcorn! All events are drop-In between the hours of 12:00pm-3:00pm in the Campus Community Hub.

Topic Specific Programming

1. Wellness Workshops: These are 50-minute sessions offered throughout the semester and are available for self-registration on the Wellness Centre website: http://www.ucalgary.ca/wellnesscentre/wellnessworkshops. Topics include: 1) healthy thinking, 2) stress management, 3) sleep strategies, 4) motivation/procrastination, 5)  managing anxiety, 6) changing unhealthy habits.

2. Wellness Online: Wellness Online is a self-guided, D2L-based program containing short narrated, interactive modules. Each module contains mental health information and strategies, designed to help students make positive changes to their wellbeing. Topics include: 1) stress management, 2) motivation & procrastination, 3) overcoming thinking traps, 4) reducing anxiety, 5) sleep strategies, and 6) exam anxiety. Students can self-register through the Self-Registration link in the Tools menu of D2L.

3. Group Support: We have numerous group support options that address specific mental health concerns and enhance coping skills for navigating the challenges of life. Please let your students know that groups have been found to be as effective or more effective than individual counselling. As groups are offered on an ongoing basis throughout the academic year, students are also able to access the support they are seeking more quickly (i.e., when they need it) than waiting for individual counselling. Finally, groups provide an important context for meeting other people who are struggling with similar issues and decrease a student’s felt sense of isolation and loneliness.

**Except where noted, all of these groups are available for student self-registration through the Wellness Centre Website: http://www.ucalgary.ca/wellnesscentre/group_support
