SU Wellness Centre: Strategies for Exam Anxiety

Who is this group for? Students who experience anxiety and fear that is impacting their test performance.

Why group? Many students report finding it very helpful to connect with others who are experiencing similar concerns. Groups provide a safe and supportive environment where students are free to learn and participate at their own pace and comfort. Furthermore, students can benefit by helping others and build a sense of community. All groups are based on evidence-based guidelines, and research shows that group is often as effective, or more effective than individual counselling for certain concerns.

What happens in this group? The Strategies for Exam Anxiety Group looks at your thinking, emotions and test performance to understand how they are connected. You will be introduced to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) ideas to help reduce your anxiety and improve your test performance. Included in the sessions will be strategies for improving your test performance, inviting relaxation and ways to increase confidence in test writing situations.


  • Module 1, Introduction: Understand anxiety and its impact on test performance. Understand the connection between your thoughts about tests, your emotions and test performance. Understand anxiety reduction strategies.
  • Module 2, Strategies: Understand and apply anxiety reduction strategies to improve your test writing performance. Begin practice with these strategies to help improve your performance and experience with test writing.
  • Module 3, Refining Practice: Discuss and refine exam anxiety reduction strategies. Understand and practice with additional strategies. Plan for future success.

 Winter 2018 Dates/Times:

  • Fridays, 2:30pm-4:00pm: February 2, February 9, February 16
  • Wednesdays, 2:00pm-3:30pm: March 28, April 4, April 11

Location: Wellness Centre Classroom

Group sessions run weekly. We recommend that participants complete all 3 sessions.
